Part I: Natural Disasters

By the end of this training program, you will be able to:

2. Complete a basic assessment of disaster preparedness in your community, your department, and yourself.
3. Apply concepts of disaster preparedness and response to a vignette illustrating a natural disaster.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of disaster response as a process that unfolds over time and continues long after the immediate emergency.

Weathering the Storm DSS Disaster Response
By the end of this training you will be able to:

• Understand the roles and responsibilities of the Department of Social Services following a disaster;
• Become acquainted with other local, state, and federal agencies charged with disaster response and the role that they play;
• Understand your changing role as a DSS professional during times of disaster;
• Become familiar with the four-phase approach to disaster response;
• Explore how disasters affect ethnically diverse individuals and communities; and
• Be aware of risk factors related to compassion fatigue and longer-term exhaustion.

Intervening with Individuals in Crisis: A Guide for Substance Abuse & Mental Health Professionals

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

• Understand and integrate the concepts and principles necessary to provide crisis services;
• Apply knowledge and skills to effectively intervene with individuals and communities in crisis;
• Evaluate the process of intervention from individual and systems perspectives.
